Position Summary

The Travel Counselor serves as the primary point of contact for visitors to the Town of Appomattox and provides accurate, comprehensive travel and tourism information. The position delivers exceptional customer service, promotes local and regional attractions, and supports tourism operations by maintaining visitor resources, tracking inquiries, and assisting with administrative functions. The role contributes to economic development by encouraging visitor engagement and extended stays within the Town and surrounding region.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Greets and assists visitors in person, by telephone, email, and mail, providing directions, brochures, maps, and travel planning information.
  • Responds to general tourism inquiries and advertising-generated requests for information.
  • Maintains current knowledge of local, regional, and statewide attractions, events, lodging, dining, and recreational opportunities.
  • Orders, stocks, and inventories brochures and tourism-related materials.
  • Tracks and enters visitor interaction data and tourism metrics into designated databases or logs.
  • Assists with record-keeping, correspondence, and administrative support tasks.
  • Updates directories, attraction rates, hours of operation, and tourism listings as assigned.
  • Assists the Lead Travel Counselor and Town Office Manager with special projects and related duties as required.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of customer service principles and hospitality/tourism operations.
  • Knowledge of Appomattox and Central Virginia tourism assets and regional travel resources.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and professionally with diverse visitors and stakeholders.
  • Ability to provide courteous, accurate, and welcoming service in a public-facing environment.
  • Basic computer skills, including data entry, email, and office productivity software.
  • Ability to maintain organized records and manage informational materials.

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Experience in customer service, hospitality, tourism, retail, or administrative support preferred.
  • Knowledge of local attractions and regional tourism resources is desirable.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions

  • This position requires standing, walking, and interacting with the public for extended periods.
  • May require lifting and carrying brochures and materials weighing up to 25 pounds.
  • Work is performed in an office or visitor center environment with frequent public contact.
